Where to Stay in Atlanta for a Convention at the Congress Center

Downtown puts you within a ten-minute walk of the show floor, but three neighbouring districts trade a few minutes of walking for quieter nights and easier parking.

The Georgia World Congress Center spreads across more than 200 acres beside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and the closest hotels cluster along Andrew Young International Boulevard and Marietta Street, roughly a five- to twelve-minute walk from the main halls. Room rates in this zone run high during large trade shows, often 40 to 60 percent above a normal midweek night, so book as soon as your dates are confirmed. Downtown suits anyone with early sessions or evening receptions on site, and the walk back after a reception beats waiting on a ride.

Staying Downtown: the walkable default

The Georgia World Congress Center spreads across more than 200 acres beside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and the closest hotels cluster along Andrew Young International Boulevard and Marietta Street, roughly a five- to twelve-minute walk from the main halls. Room rates in this zone run high during large trade shows, often 40 to 60 percent above a normal midweek night, so book as soon as your dates are confirmed. Downtown suits anyone with early sessions or evening receptions on site, and the walk back after a reception beats waiting on a ride.

The trade-off is the streetscape after dark. Expect empty sidewalks south of the Omni hotel, limited late-night food beyond the CNN Center food hall and a handful of hotel bars, and heavy traffic when the Falcons or Atlanta United play at the stadium. Ask for a room on a high floor facing north and you avoid stadium noise. I would book downtown for a three-day convention with a packed schedule, and look elsewhere for longer stays or light itineraries.

Midtown and the Arts Center corridor

Midtown sits two MARTA stops north of the convention district, with the Arts Center and Midtown stations on the red and gold lines and a bus transfer or 20-minute walk to the halls. Hotels along Peachtree Street between 10th and 14th streets sit beside the High Museum of Art, Piedmont Park and Colony Square, and rates here often come in 20 to 30 percent below convention-week downtown pricing. Restaurants are denser and stay open later, from Buford Highway-style spots to Peachtree Street mainstays.

The commute is the catch. A MARTA ride plus the walk from the station to the halls adds 25 to 35 minutes each way, and the system is not built for late nights. If your show runs 9 to 5 and you want a proper dinner and a quieter room, Midtown is my pick; for a convention with 7 a.m. breakfasts, stay downtown instead.

Buckhead for space, not proximity

Buckhead lies seven to nine miles north along Peachtree Road, roughly 20 to 35 minutes by car outside rush hour and considerably longer between 7 and 9 a.m. Hotels here offer larger rooms, more suites and parking that is simpler to use than downtown garages, where event-day rates climb quickly. The neighbourhood around Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza is best for travellers combining the convention with family or a longer stay.

Unless you are travelling with a car and a companion who has their own plans, Buckhead adds a daily commute you will resent by day three. Skip it for a two- or three-day show and treat it as an option for a week-long trip when room size and quiet matter more than the walk.

Decatur, the airport and the value edge

Decatur, six miles east on the blue line, is a genuine town centre with a MARTA station, independent restaurants around the square and hotel rates that usually sit below both downtown and Midtown. The ride to the convention district takes about 25 minutes with a change at Five Points. The airport area, 10 miles south off Interstate 85, is the cheapest option but the least pleasant, and the trip to the halls routinely runs 25 to 40 minutes.

March to May and September to November bring the best weather and the busiest convention calendar, so book early in those months. For most first-time convention visitors I would book a downtown hotel within walking distance of the halls, and choose Decatur only if the budget is tight and the schedule is light. Fill in the dates and the site will show what is actually open.

How we know this

"Where to Stay in Atlanta for a Convention at the Congress Center" was written by the people who run AirFair Atlanta and is published as they wrote it, in November 2026. It is in 4 parts: Staying Downtown: the walkable default, Midtown and the Arts Center corridor, Buckhead for space, not proximity and Decatur, the airport and the value edge.

Asked often

Visiting it.

How far is the airport from the convention district? +

Hartsfield-Jackson is about 10 miles south of the Georgia World Congress Center, roughly 20 to 40 minutes by car depending on traffic. MARTA's red and gold lines connect the airport to downtown in about 25 minutes.

When should I book a hotel for a large convention? +

As soon as the dates are fixed. Convention weeks in Atlanta can push downtown rates 40 to 60 percent above normal, and the closest hotels fill months ahead. Spring and autumn are the busiest seasons.

Is a car useful during a convention stay? +

Usually not. Downtown parking is costly on event days and the halls are walkable from nearby hotels. A car helps only if you are staying in Buckhead or Decatur and plan to explore outside the convention schedule.
